1-3-26 Death. Sad Dogs. Baptism. Snow Dogs. Mud. Grandkids.
Retired/Missionary Life. Sunday.
Just as I promised last night, I wore my brand new BYU tie to church today in celebration of the big win. A few people noticed....
Sacrament Meeting. Men's Meeting. Missionary Correlation Meeting. No lessons set today, so we came right back home. And I wasn't feeling all that hot (a bit of vertigo), so took a really long nap, which felt really good.
After the coma, we read, ate some snacks, watched some church videos. After a dinner of leftovers, we watched the movie "My Sister's Keeper." Great movie and very relevant for those living with cancer (that would be us both). The book is better though, as it almost always is.
The critter camera sent me two pictures today. One of a huge rack of antlers. (A huge reindeer lost on his way home to the North Pole??) And another of enough snow to make the branches on the tree cover the camera and set it off. Now we're talking about trying to go up there Wednesday or Thursday to bring in the New Year!
Old people watching cancer movies. Yup. That's what we've become. We actually argue (if you can call it that) about who is going to go first and from which cancer. And which one of us would be the saddest if left behind. Morbid? Or adequate planning?
Retired/Missionary Life. Monday.
Seems like we run low on food every week. So, every week we go get food. Put together this week's somewhat busy schedule. Made up scrumptious menus. Created a detailed shopping list. Drove to Rockford. Played Rummy and ate lunch. (Best Rummy hand ever, it even entertained Hanna, and we had to take a picture.). (I ordered Steak Caesar Salad, Hanna ordered a Reuben.) Drove to Worley and filled up with cheap Idaho Gas. Drove to Plummer to walk on the Trail of the CDAs. Sadly, it wasn't plowed (it usually is) and it was thus a sheet of ice. No go! The boys were very depressed when we drove away. (Once home, we went for a short snowy walk and played fetch in the yard until they wouldn't run anymore. And then I got on the treadmill to get a full walk in.) Picked up the groceries. Drove home. Unloaded. Put away.
Read a little bit. Worked on the bookkeeping a little bit. Downloaded the new tax software since it was on sale if you bought it by 12/31. Had a friend over to cut my hair. (For a guy, this is a personal hygiene issue, not something you show off, so no pics.) And then we watched a pre-recorded football game. N Texas vs San Diego State. Nearly 100 points scored. Over 1100 yards of offense total. QB drama. Great game to watch.
And we attended the Mission-wide Zoom Meeting like always on Monday night.
And here, have a picture of two sad dogs. We locked them on the deck while I got my haircut and they were not too happy about that. Poor puppies! But they survived.
Retired/Missionary Life. Tuesday.
First up, Missionary District Council Meeting where we brainstorm ideas and give each other council on how to better serve and be better missionaries.
Sack lunch sandwiches in the truck in the church parking lot while the boys watched closely.
We had an appointment kind of scheduled after that, but they couldn't meet with us. So, we ran some errands. The bank. Dropped off laundry at the cleaners. And took the boys for a kind of icy walk on the Centennial Trail. (The river is running high and fast and is fun to watch. Gussy got real excited about some quail and also some ducks he saw!)
Then we drove downtown to pick up my new glasses. New glasses and fresh haircut, I apparently have a "new look" now. I'm sure someone will get a face shot of me soon to post on here...
Back to the Valley to teach a lesson on Prophets there. Then to the South Hill to attend a baptism meeting of the other Spanish Congregation. (There is on in the Valley and one downtown). We love the missionaries that serve there and want to support them plus we saw a really good friend of ours, a guy that daily shows a ton of faith, that moved to that congregation a bit ago. It was an awesome meeting with several new folks who are investigating the church.
Retired/Missionary Life. Wednesday.
We got up this morning to see that it looked like a great day for a road trip! So, we set off for the Stewart Highlands way up in the mountains near Sanders. We saw wind destruction, great looking fall crops, dealt with a huge tree across our driveway, broke trail at places, watched the boys play in the snow, went for a walk up there, and drove back home.
At home we did our studies and changed our movie theme. Having watched all of our Christmas Movies, we now decided to watch Football Movies. To honor the end of Football Season and to get pumped up for the new year. Tonight we watched Rudy.
And now we're going to bed. Hours before the new year. The thought of staying up late just for kicks and fun was outgrown years ago by us old people. See you next year!
Finally, we included a picture from last night's baptism. Us with our good friend, Ivan, who was also there and the Wildings, an awesome Senior Couple just like us that serves in the Downtown Spanish Congregation and we love dearly. Enjoy!
Retired/Missionary Life. Thursday.
Best New Year's resolution I ever made was over 30 years ago. I made a resolution to never make another New Year's resolution ever again. And I have kept that ever since, including today. I take such stuff one day at a time lest I put off setting a new goal until next New Year...
Lazy hang out day. Spent the morning in the kitchen making up some grub to eat the rest of the day. Western Hospitality. Fresh baked bread. Shrimp dip.
Afternoon, I read, watched a bit of football, read some more. (How many SEC teams were in the CFP to start with and how many are still in? hmmmm...) I enjoyed watching Alabama get stomped and became a new fan of the Hoosiers. And we watched the last bit of the Ole Miss victory. Drama!!
Evening, in keeping with our theme of watching football movies, we watched American Underdog. Great show!
From the pics below, you can see how Frivvy spent the day. (Me too!) And also some shots of beasts from the day before up at the Highlands. Enjoy!!
Retired/Missionary Life. Friday.
Afternoon found us going into town to worship in the temple. Lots of missionaries in there with us. We love serving with these dedicated young missionaries.
Picked up laundry.
Ate dinner at that Fancy Like Place. Fun time seeing Puka's face on the menu!
The truck was really muddy after our trek to the top of the mountain at Stewart Highlands. I enjoyed that! Mud on your JEEP gets you man points. But, Hanna insisted we wash it because it didn't look missionary appropriate and she kept getting mud on her skirt as she climbed in and out. OK. We washed it. In the rain even. No more mud. (And just a note that ducks deduct 3 man points each...)
After dinner, we spent time with our Chiropractor getting massaged, decompressed, lasered, and adjusted.
Let's call it our temple day with an added medical touch.
Retired/Missionary Life. Saturday.
First, we declared it Old People go to Breakfast Day and headed for Plummer to dine at the Gateway Cafe. Yummy scrambles! And Book of Mormon Rummy! We saddened the boys again. Horrible. We planned to walk on the Trail of the CDA, but it was colder in Plummer than at home and the trail was still covered in ice. No way! Neither of us wants to fall. They looked pretty depressed as we pulled out of the parking lot. So, we went back home and walked on the paved streets here. Not as much fun, but still a good walk.
